Which Epic ride to hit first

You set an alarm, you get the kids up, you're at the front of the line for early entry. Then the ride isn't running. We logged every Epic ride's status every few minutes for a full year to see how often that happens, ride by ride. Go to Mario Kart first, and keep Mine-Cart Madness out of the first slot.

A year of Epic ride status 81%of mornings since July, Mario Kart is running 15 min in 1 in 3mornings since July, Mine-Cart isn't ~1 hra headliner is down on a typical day 12months, every ride, every few minutes
Early entry rotates

Early entry isn't the same lineup every month. Epic rotates which rides run during the early hour. Since July it's been Mario Kart, Mine-Cart, Ministry, Hiccup's, Stardust, Yoshi's and Dragon Racer's Rally. Monsters Unchained and Curse of the Werewolf open with the rest of the park.

01 · The morning odds

Is it running when you get there?

For every early-entry morning since July, we checked whether each ride was running 15 minutes after the gates opened. The 15 minutes gives the ride time to send its first train and the app time to catch up.

Epic Universe early entry · Jul 1 to Oct 5, 2026 · 97 mornings · ride status as Universal's app showed it
Ride Running 15 min in Went down in its first hour Verdict
Yoshi's Adventure 95% 2% Almost always up
Dragon Racer's Rally 91% 3% Almost always up
Stardust Racers 84% 13% Usually up
Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge 81% 11% Best headliner bet
Battle at the Ministry 74% 19% 1 in 4 it isn't
Hiccup's Wing Gliders 74% 18% 1 in 4 it isn't
Mine-Cart Madness 68% 20% 1 in 3 it isn't

How long you'd wait for it

A late Mario Kart usually isn't late for long. It wasn't running 15 minutes in on 18 mornings: 3 times it had opened and stopped again, and the other 15 were late starts. Of those, 8 opened within half an hour of the gates and 13 within an hour. Mine-Cart is the opposite. Of its 31 mornings, 7 were an early stop and 24 were late starts, and 9 of those took more than an hour.

02 · What I'd do

Mario Kart first, backup next door

Mario Kart's line climbs from about 25 minutes at early entry to around 100 by late morning, so it's one of the biggest wins of the morning, and it's among the most reliable headliners in the early hour. It also lives in Super Nintendo World with Mine-Cart and Yoshi's. If it's down, you're not stuck.

The move

Walk straight to Mario Kart

If it's running, ride it. If it isn't, check Mine-Cart across the land and take it if it's up. If neither is, do Yoshi's (running on 95% of mornings) and go back to Mario Kart. Most late starts there clear inside the hour.

Skip

Don't build the morning around Mine-Cart

It's the least reliable ride at early entry, it goes down again in its first hour on 1 day in 5 even when it opens on time, and its line is already around 60 minutes when the gates open. Ride it when you see it running with a wait you can live with.

Ministry and no early entry

Battle at the Ministry runs about three mornings in four, but it sits alone in its land, so a slow start costs you a walk to your next ride, and its line starts near an hour. The evening is the better shot, when it drops to around 35 minutes by 8 pm. No early entry? Curse of the Werewolf isn't in the early hour, so it's fresh at regular open, and since July it was running 15 minutes after open on all but 5% of days.

03 · The rest of the day

How long each ride is down

Rope drop is only the start. Across a full year of regular park hours, here's how many minutes each ride wasn't running, per 12-hour day. The second column leaves out minutes when 3 or more other outdoor rides were stopped at the same time. Those shared stops lined up with rain almost every time from April through December.

What to expect all day

Plan on any headliner being down about an hour a day, more on a rainy summer afternoon. Mario Kart has quietly gotten better through the year. Mine-Cart is the one to watch. Outside shared stops it was down over 100 minutes a day from April through July before easing off in August and September. Across the seven big rides (Mine-Cart, Mario Kart, Ministry, Hiccup's, Fyre Drill, Monsters and Werewolf), downtime outside those shared stops has held around 55 minutes a day since spring, so don't count on it fixing itself.

How we measured this methodology

"Down" means Universal's own app showed the ride as not operating. We read that status for all 11 rides every 2.5 to 5 minutes, all day, from October 8, 2025 to October 5, 2026. Each reading counts until the next one. We left out a few days with gaps in the feed, a known outage on April 21 to 24, 2026, and refurbishments (any run of 3 or more days a ride was basically closed: Stardust Racers in late January and from February 19 to March 24, Fyre Drill February 1 to 18, Mine-Cart April 29 to May 3). A one- or two-day closure counts as down.

Rope drop means early entry, the hour before official open for Universal hotel guests. Because Epic changes the early-entry lineup through the year, a ride only counts in weeks it was actually running during that hour. "Running 15 min in" means the app showed it operating at that moment. "Not counting shared stops" leaves out any minute when 3 or more other outdoor rides were down at the same time; it still counts a ride stopping alongside one or two others. We checked those shared minutes against hourly rain at the park. From April to December they fell in a rainy hour 84 to 90% of the time, against 11 to 64% for ordinary running time. January to March they mostly didn't, so we don't call them weather. This is what the app showed, not a claim about why any ride stopped.

Rope drop FAQ

The quick answers, straight from the ride status data.

What should I ride first at Epic Universe? the short answer

Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. Since July it's been running 15 minutes into early entry on 81% of mornings, it has one of the biggest morning-to-peak climbs in the park, and when it's late it usually opens within the hour. Mine-Cart Madness and Yoshi's Adventure are in the same land if it isn't running.

Is Mine-Cart Madness a good rope drop? usually not

It's the least reliable early-entry ride we track, not running 15 minutes in on about 1 morning in 3 since July, and when it's late it often stays late. Its line is also around 60 minutes at the gates. Ride it later when you see it running with a wait you can live with.

How often do Epic Universe rides break down? about an hour a day

Over a year of regular park hours, seven of the big rides (Mine-Cart, Mario Kart, Ministry, Hiccup's, Fyre Drill, Monsters and Werewolf) were down about 74 minutes per 12-hour day on average, and about 56 of those came outside moments when 3 or more other outdoor rides were stopped too. Mine-Cart Madness was down the most, about 2 hours a day. Mario Kart was among the most reliable, around 37 minutes.

Which rides run during Epic's early entry? it rotates

It changes through the year. Since July, Mario Kart, Mine-Cart Madness, Battle at the Ministry, Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Stardust Racers, Yoshi's Adventure and Dragon Racer's Rally have run in the early hour, while Monsters Unchained and Curse of the Werewolf open with the rest of the park. Last winter it was different, so check the morning you go.
