Walt Disney World: which park first?
Four parks that look interchangeable on a map and behave nothing alike once the gates open. Here is how the days actually run at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, which one needs your earliest start, and what Early Entry and Lightning Lane change.
Built from 1,000,000+ measured wait times across the four parks since January 2025, refreshed nightly. See our methodology. Walt Disney World is coming to the Ride Ready app; today the app covers Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and 12 more parks.
The short version
- One day only? Magic Kingdom. The most rides, the longest hours, and the two lines everyone talks about (TRON Lightcycle / Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train).
- Which park punishes a late start? Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Slinky Dog Dash is near its peak by mid-morning and Flight of Passage holds a long line through lunch. Be at the gate before open at both.
- Which park is busiest this year? EPCOT, by our measured crowd levels on 2026 days so far: 5.2 average against 4.9 at Hollywood Studios, 4.8 at Magic Kingdom and 4.7 at Animal Kingdom. Festival weekends do it.
- Staying at a Disney hotel? Early Entry gives you 30 minutes before official opening at all four parks, every day. It matters most at Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.
- Lightning Lane? Useful at Hollywood Studios on any busy day, and for TRON or Guardians if you would rather not give them your first hour and your last. At Magic Kingdom and EPCOT a rope-drop start plus the last two hours before close covers most of the headliners without it.
The four parks by the numbers
Same resort, four different shapes of day. These come from the measured wait curves behind each park's hub page and from our crowd calendars.
| Park | Typical hours | 2026 crowd level, measured days | Longest line, median at its peak | Headliner down mid-day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Kingdom | 9am to 10pm; closes 6pm on hard-ticket party nights | 4.8 | TRON Lightcycle / Run, 75 to 80 min by 10pm | 23 of 30 days |
| EPCOT | 9am to 9pm | 5.2 | Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, 80 to 85 min in the evening | 30 of 30 days |
| Hollywood Studios | 9am to 9pm | 4.9 | Slinky Dog Dash, 65 to 70 min by mid-morning | 28 of 30 days |
| Animal Kingdom | 8am to 6pm most days | 4.7 | Avatar Flight of Passage, 60 to 70 min through late morning | 29 of 30 days |
Crowd level is the average of our 1 to 10 daily scale over measured 2026 days (January 1 to August 25 for three parks, to September 11 for Magic Kingdom); forecast days are excluded. Peak medians are from measured waits, late April to late August 2026. "Down mid-day" counts operated days in July and August 2026 on which at least one of the park's six headliners was down for 30 minutes or more between 11am and 8pm. Hours are the most common schedule over the next 60 days.
Two things jump out. Every park loses a headliner for half an hour or more on most days, so any plan that depends on one ride at one time is fragile. And Animal Kingdom's day is short: it opens an hour earlier than the others and is usually closed by 6pm, which is why its morning is the whole game.
Which park needs the earliest start
- Slinky Dog Dash70 min by mid-morning
- Rise of the Resistance50 to 60 min afternoons
- Rock 'n' Roller Coaster65 to 70 min afternoons
- Flight of Passage65 to 70 min late morning
- Na'vi River Journey45 to 50 min late morning
- Kilimanjaro Safaris50 min mid-morning, 10 min after 3pm
- TRON Lightcycle / Run55 midday, 75 to 80 by 10pm
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train45 to 50 most of the day, eases late
- Guardians: Cosmic Rewind60 to 70 at open, 80 to 85 by evening
Median waits from measured data, late April to late August 2026. Weekdays and weekends differ by a few minutes, not by shape.
Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom front-load their pain: the big lines are long by 10am and stay long. Magic Kingdom and EPCOT do the opposite on their headliners. TRON and Guardians actually get worse as the evening goes on, while Seven Dwarfs, Space Mountain, Peter Pan's Flight and Frozen Ever After fall off in the last two hours before close. So at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT the plan is rope drop plus a late night. At the other two it is rope drop, full stop.
Early Entry and Lightning Lane, in plain words
Early Theme Park Entry. Guests of Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels get into any of the four parks 30 minutes before official opening, every day of their stay, and Disney says the benefit runs through 2027. You need valid admission. Select attractions run during the early window. Thirty minutes is enough for one headliner and a walk to the second, which at Hollywood Studios is the difference between a 15-minute Slinky Dog Dash line and a 70-minute one.
Lightning Lane. Disney sells three products, all booked in the My Disney Experience app. Multi Pass lets you pick up to three experiences with arrival windows, then pick another each time you redeem one. Single Pass is for the most in-demand attractions that Multi Pass does not cover, up to two a day. Premier Pass gives one-time entry to every Lightning Lane experience in one park for one day. None of them shortens a line for free; you pay to join a shorter one.
You are at Hollywood Studios on a weekend or holiday week, you cannot be at the gate before open, or you want Flight of Passage without spending your Animal Kingdom morning in line.
You can rope drop and you have the evening. At Magic Kingdom, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain and Peter Pan's Flight all drop hard in the last two hours; at EPCOT, Frozen Ever After and Remy's do the same. Those are free.
Crowd calendars
Every day since January 2025 scored 1 to 10 from measured waits, plus a nightly forecast for the next twelve months. Pick a lighter day before you buy tickets.
Sample park orders
2 days
- Day 1, Magic Kingdom: rope drop, a long midday break, back for the last two hours when Seven Dwarfs, Space Mountain and Peter Pan's Flight fall off.
- Day 2, Hollywood Studios: at the gate before open for Slinky Dog Dash, then Rise of the Resistance late in the day when its line is at its shortest.
4 days
- Animal Kingdom first on the morning you can be earliest. Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey and Everest before 11am, the safari after 3pm.
- Hollywood Studios on your second early morning.
- Magic Kingdom on the day you can stay latest.
- EPCOT as the recovery day: Guardians first thing, World Showcase all afternoon, Frozen and Remy's in the last two hours.
What changes this advice
- Party nights at Magic Kingdom: on many autumn nights the park closes to day guests at 6pm for hard-ticket events, so the late-night dip does not exist. Check the hours for your date before you plan on it.
- Festival weekends at EPCOT: the crowd is in World Showcase, not in the ride lines. Ride Guardians and Test Track early, then join the festival.
- Rain: Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest close for weather at Animal Kingdom; Magic Kingdom and EPCOT have the most indoor headliners.
- A headliner goes down: it happens on most days at every one of these parks. Have a second ride in mind for every step, and check the posted wait before you walk across the park.
