Ride Ready · The math on Lightning Lane

Is Lightning Lane worth it?

We logged every Lightning Lane change at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom this fall, plus the posted standby wait every five minutes. It's worth it for a short list of rides, about three on a quiet fall day and about seven on a holiday week. Most of the rest have a free window, and it's usually the first hour.

The catch

Some passes are gone before your day starts. The Single Pass for Seven Dwarfs, TRON, Guardians and Rise of the Resistance, and the Multi Pass for Slinky Dog Dash, were already sold out by 9 AM on 14 to 18 of the 18 days we checked. If you want one of those, buy it the minute your booking window opens at 7 AM Eastern.

01 · Where it pays

The three worth paying for

On a quiet fall day, these three stay long all day, so there's no free hour to wait for. Holiday weeks add four more. Visiting from late October through April? Busy stretches sit between the two lists, and holiday weeks match section 04. Check your dates on the crowd calendar.

Buy it

Guardians of the Galaxy, EPCOT

Single Pass, $18 to $22 this fall. Its typical posted wait was 70 or more in every hour after opening and climbed to 90 by evening. Even resort-guest Early Entry only got it to about 55, so at about $19 it was the best Single Pass value we measured this fall. Posted waits run long, so treat the time saved as an upper bound. On holiday weeks Flight of Passage overtakes it (see section 04). If you buy it, start your morning on Test Track or Frozen Ever After.

Book first

Slinky Dog Dash, Hollywood Studios

Your one top-tier Multi Pass pick. It posted 55 in the first hour, 60 to 65 most of the day and 45 at its best, right before close. The Multi Pass was already gone by 9 AM on 14 of 18 days, so book it at 7 AM. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster saves about as much at noon, but it posts about 30 in the first hour and its Multi Pass lasts to about 2 PM, so ride it at the open and book Slinky.

Book first

Test Track, EPCOT

Your top-tier Multi Pass pick at EPCOT. 55 at opening, 65 to 75 most of the day, and still 60 in the last hour. The Multi Pass sold out every day we watched, usually before 10 AM. Staying at a Disney resort? Early Entry posted it around 30, so ride it then and either skip Multi Pass here or spend your top-tier pick on Frozen Ever After. Fine riding apart? Test Track has a single-rider line. Disney doesn't publish its wait, so we can't measure it. Try it before you pay.

Three that depend on your day

Depends

Peter Pan's Flight, Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom's Multi Pass is worth buying on most days, and your top-tier pick is Peter Pan or Big Thunder. Big Thunder posted 5 minutes in the first hour, while Peter Pan never went under 25 and sat at 35 to 45 most of the day. There at opening? Ride Big Thunder and TRON in the first hour, then spend the pick here. Arriving late? Then Big Thunder is the pick. If you have Early Entry, ride Peter Pan during it (about 25) and book Big Thunder. Peter Pan eases to about 25 in the last hour on late nights, but there's no late dip on party nights.

Depends

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Magic Kingdom

The cheapest Single Pass ($11 to $15 this fall). It posts about 35 in the first hour and 40 to 45 later, about 60 at 6 PM on late nights, so it never gets truly short. Early Entry doesn't help (about 40). Make it your first ride at opening, or buy it if Big Thunder and TRON come first.

Depends

Flight of Passage, Animal Kingdom

Single Pass, $15 to $19. It posts 50 in the morning and 40 in the late afternoon, so the only savings is staying late. This fall it was still on sale at 9 AM on 16 of 18 days and sold out on only 8, so you can decide that morning.

Keep the money

Skip buying

Rise of the Resistance, if you can stay late

45 to 55 most of the day, then about 25 in the last hour before close. Ride it last and keep the $20 to $25 Single Pass. It breaks down often, so keep a backup for your last hour.

Skip buying

Animal Kingdom Multi Pass, on a quiet week

Expedition Everest posted about 5 in the first hour, Kali River Rapids about 5 once it opens, and Kilimanjaro Safaris about 10 after 3 PM. The one long line here is Flight of Passage, and Multi Pass doesn't cover it. On holiday weeks Everest, Safaris and Na'vi reach 45 to 70 by noon, so Multi Pass earns its price here too. If you buy it, book Na'vi River Journey first. Its Multi Pass sold out on 11 of 18 days this fall, and Safaris' never did.

02 · Booking order

Which Lightning Lane to book first

When each pass usually ran out this fall, earliest first. Resort guests book 7 days ahead and everyone else 3 days ahead, both at 7 AM Eastern, so book down this list in order.

Sold out here means a pass stayed gone for an hour. Most first blink out earlier (Pooh about 10:50, Peter Pan 11:20, Toy Story Mania 8:45). Rise's Single Pass was back on sale at noon on 10 of 18 days. Passes go earlier on busier dates, and Disney Food Blog logged Big Thunder and Test Track around 8:45 AM in May.

Booking late?

On a typical afternoon at 2 PM, 12 of Magic Kingdom's 16 Multi Pass rides were still bookable, along with 6 of 9 at EPCOT, 4 of 8 at Hollywood Studios and 3 of 4 at Animal Kingdom. When Magic Kingdom closed at 6 PM for a party night, its Multi Pass headliners went 1.5 to 4 hours sooner than on late nights.

Keep it rolling

Book the earliest return times you can get. You can book another Multi Pass each time you use one, so early returns keep them coming, and sold-out rides blink back for a few minutes as people cancel.

Staying on property?

Disney resort guests get in 30 minutes early, and that half hour is the cheapest time of day for most headliners. This fall Early Entry posted Frozen Ever After at 25, Peter Pan's Flight at 25, Test Track and Rise of the Resistance at 30, Remy at 35 and Flight of Passage at 40. Seven Dwarfs (about 40) and Slinky Dog Dash (about 50) stay long even then. TRON isn't part of Early Entry. Disney sets which rides open early and changes the list, so check Disney's Early Entry page before you go.

Fair point

You can't ride five headliners in one first hour. That's the real case for Lightning Lane, and it's fair. The move is to spend the first hour on the rides that build fastest, take the middle of the day slow, and come back for the ones that ease off late. Magic Kingdom closed at 6 PM on 10 of the 18 days in this window for party nights, so check your night before you count on an evening.

04 · Busy weeks

Holiday weeks change the list

Same rides, typical posted wait in the first hour after opening and at noon, on Thanksgiving week 2025, Christmas week 2025 and spring break 2026. The first hour still works for a few of them, and Early Entry for a few more. By noon most lines are 50 or longer.

The busy-week list

On a holiday week it's about seven, all five Single Pass rides plus Slinky Dog Dash and Test Track. TRON and Flight of Passage lose their cheap hour entirely. At 115 to 145 minutes at Christmas, Flight of Passage overtakes Guardians as the best Single Pass deal, and Multi Pass starts paying for itself at midday on everything else. Rise stays long later in the day, too. At Christmas it still posted about 65 at 8 PM, so riding it late doesn't save much on a holiday week, and it breaks down often. An early start is still the cheapest part of the day for most rides, so that part of the plan doesn't change.

05 · The shape

Same park, three shapes

Big Thunder starts as a walk-on and builds. Seven Dwarfs never gets short. TRON gets longer as the night goes.

Magic Kingdom, typical posted wait by hour, Sept 11 to Oct 10, 2026. Hours from 6 PM on come from the nights the park stayed open late.

06 · The money

What it adds up to

In early October, Multi Pass ran about $35 a person at Magic Kingdom, $29 at Hollywood Studios, $28 at EPCOT and $19 at Animal Kingdom, per day. Premier Pass, one entry to every Lightning Lane ride in a park, ran $179 a person at Animal Kingdom to $399 at Magic Kingdom on Oct 5. Single Pass prices on this page are what we saw Sept 23 to Oct 10; Disney raised them for November (Seven Dwarfs up to $18, the others up to $20 to $25). Disney prices it by date (early October prices), so check yours in My Disney Experience or on Disney's Lightning Lane page.

Every park, every day

About $444 for a family of four

Multi Pass at all four parks, before a single Single Pass. A lot of that buys rides that post 5 to 10 minutes in the first hour.

Where it pays

$76 back, or $188 with Early Entry

Skip Multi Pass at Animal Kingdom on a quiet week ($19 a person, $76 for four). If you're staying at a Disney resort, skip it at EPCOT too, since Test Track posted about 30 in Early Entry ($28 a person, $112 for four). Keep it at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, and spend part of what you save on Guardians.

When to pay anyway

On a holiday week, buy it at Animal Kingdom too. At noon Everest posted 50 to 55, Na'vi 55 to 70 and Kilimanjaro Safaris 45 to 60 across Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break, and every number on this page runs higher those weeks.

Skip it entirely

On a 6 PM party day at Magic Kingdom, daytime waits for the big rides have run about a third shorter than the rest of the week. On an Extended Evening Hours night, the park stays open two extra hours for Deluxe and select other resort guests.

07 · Common questions

Lightning Lane FAQ

The quick answers, straight from the wait data.

Is Lightning Lane worth it at Disney World? the short answer

For a short list of rides, yes. About three on a quiet fall day, about seven on holiday weeks. Guardians of the Galaxy's typical posted wait was 70 minutes or more in every hour after opening, and about 55 even during resort-guest Early Entry, so its Single Pass ($18 to $22) was the best Single Pass value we measured this fall. On holiday weeks Flight of Passage overtakes it. Slinky Dog Dash and Test Track are the Multi Pass picks worth booking first, and Magic Kingdom's Multi Pass is worth buying on most days. Most other rides post 5 to 15 minutes in the first hour after opening, which costs nothing.

Is Lightning Lane worth it at Christmas or Thanksgiving? busy weeks

For more rides, yes. On Christmas week 2025, TRON posted about 95 minutes in the first hour and Flight of Passage about 115, so neither had a cheap hour. Buy the Single Passes you care about and make Slinky Dog Dash and Test Track your top-tier picks. Jungle Cruise and Everest still posted about 20 in the first hour, and Toy Story Mania and Tower of Terror posted about 10 to 20 in Early Entry, so an early start still pays.

Which Lightning Lane should I book first? 7 AM

Book any Single Pass you want the moment your window opens at 7 AM Eastern, because Seven Dwarfs, TRON, Guardians and Rise of the Resistance were gone by 9 AM on most days we checked this fall. For Multi Pass, make Slinky Dog Dash your top-tier pick at Hollywood Studios and Test Track at EPCOT. At Magic Kingdom, take Peter Pan's Flight if you'll be there at opening (ride Big Thunder then, at about 5), or Big Thunder if you won't. If you have Early Entry, ride Peter Pan during it (about 25) and book Big Thunder.

Is Lightning Lane worth it at Animal Kingdom? rarely

Rarely on a quiet week. This fall Expedition Everest posted about 5 minutes in the first hour, Kali River Rapids about 5 once it opens, and Kilimanjaro Safaris about 10 after 3 PM. The one line that stays long is Flight of Passage, at 40 to 55 all day. Its Single Pass ran $15 to $19 and was still on sale at 9 AM on most days. On holiday weeks Everest, Safaris and Na'vi reached 45 to 70 by noon, so Multi Pass earns its price there too.

Is the Rise of the Resistance Single Pass worth it? stay late

Only if you're leaving early. Rise posted 45 to 55 most of the day this fall, but about 25 in the last hour before close. If you can stay, ride it last and keep the $20 to $25. It breaks down often, so keep a backup for your last hour. That's a quiet-week call: at Christmas it still posted about 65 at 8 PM, so on holiday weeks buy the Single Pass.

Is the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Single Pass worth it? cheapest one

It's the cheapest Single Pass ($11 to $15 this fall), and Seven Dwarfs posted 30 or more all day. If you won't be there at opening, or you'll spend the first hour on Big Thunder and TRON, it's a fair buy. Otherwise ride it in the first public hour (about 35). Early Entry ran about 40, so it doesn't help here.

Is Premier Pass worth it? one park, every ride

Rarely, on our numbers. Premier Pass gives one Lightning Lane entry to every ride in one park for a day, and on Oct 5 it ran $179 a person at Animal Kingdom, $229 at EPCOT, $339 at Hollywood Studios and $399 at Magic Kingdom. Many of the rides it covers posted 5 to 15 minutes in the first hour this fall. At Magic Kingdom, Multi Pass ($35) plus the Seven Dwarfs and TRON Single Passes ($15 and $23 at their fall highs) came to $73, under a fifth of Premier's price there.

Can you do Disney World without Lightning Lane? mostly

Mostly, yes. At Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean all posted 5 to 10 minutes in the first hour after opening this fall. Tiana's closes for refurbishment from November 2, 2026 and is expected back around December 18. The catch is you can't ride them all in one hour, which is where a plan that moves with the waits earns its keep.

Is Lightning Lane worth it with a toddler? little kids

Less than you'd think. In the first hour this fall, Pirates of the Caribbean posted about 5 and Jungle Cruise about 10, and at EPCOT Spaceship Earth and The Seas with Nemo posted about 5. Peter Pan's Flight is the exception. It never went under 25, so it's the top-tier pick to make with little kids. Winnie the Pooh's Multi Pass was gone by about 11 AM on party nights, so if you buy Multi Pass for one of those days, book Pooh early. If naps cost you the evening, Multi Pass does more for you, since Pirates and Jungle Cruise dropped back to about 5 in the last hour on nights the park stays open late.

Where do these numbers come from? methodology

Ride Ready reads Disney World's public posted standby waits and Lightning Lane availability every five minutes. This guide covers Sept 23 to Oct 10, 2026 for Lightning Lane (18 days) and about 30 days of standby. "Typical" means the median posted wait for that hour across those days, rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. Table hours start at the official opening; Early Entry is reported separately. A pass counts as sold out when it stayed unavailable for at least an hour; the nightly shutdown near close doesn't count. On a few days a pass logged no change at all, and we counted it as still sold out from the day before. These are posted waits, not timed waits. Timed studies find Disney's posted waits often run 10 to 20 minutes longer than the real line, and Disney doesn't publish how long the Lightning Lane line itself takes, so savings assume a short one. Treat every "minutes saved" here as an upper bound. Holiday weeks come from an older archive logged about every 20 to 30 minutes, so a Thanksgiving or Christmas cell rests on roughly 10 to 30 readings (Christmas is 6 days). For 2025 we inferred each day's opening from the park's first reading, since Early Entry started 30 minutes before opening on every day we could check. Multi Pass and Premier Pass prices aren't in Disney's feed, so those come from Disney's published prices as reported in early October.

08 · The catch in any plan

When the plan breaks

Every plan on this page assumes a typical day. Yours won't be. A ride goes down for an hour, a Florida storm parks every coaster, a party night closes the park at 6. The moment that happens, a list made at breakfast is just a list.
