NightFlight Expedition is open in Wildwood Grove, and a brand new headliner at the back of the park pulls the whole rope-drop crowd with it, so that's where the day starts. The marquee everyone else knows is Lightning Rod at the front gate, but the ride that quietly eats your day is FireChaser Express over in Wilderness Pass. It goes from a short line at opening to the longest one in the park by lunchtime, and stays there all afternoon. Thunderhead is the trap on the other end: the rope-drop crowd loads the famous woodie first, so it looks packed at open, but it's a near walk-on from midday on and a completely different ride once the sun goes down. Bank NightFlight and FireChaser early, then save Thunderhead for the dark.

Be at the gate before open
Wildwood Grove sits at the back of the park, so the walk is the whole game. The first wave through the turnstiles gets the shortest NightFlight Expedition line of the day.

Don't stop for Lightning Rod at the gate. It peaks around midday and thins through the evening, so it's cheapest on the way out.
Big Bear Mountain, same land
Big Bear is a few steps from NightFlight and more than doubles its line between opening and 11am, so take it before you leave Wildwood Grove.
Bank FireChaser Express and Wild Eagle
FireChaser more than doubles its wait between opening and lunchtime and sits near its daily peak from noon through midafternoon. Wild Eagle next door is a near walk-on. Take both in one sweep.

FireChaser Express
The real bottleneck, and Wilderness Pass is the next land over. The dual-launch family coaster more than doubles its wait between opening and lunchtime and sits near its daily peak from noon through midafternoon, so this bank makes the whole day.
Wild Eagle
Right next to FireChaser and a near walk-on at open. The first wing coaster in North America. It creeps up around lunch and drops back to a walk-on after 4p, so take it in the same sweep or grab it late.
Mystery Mine
The slow-loading indoor Eurofighter peaks late morning, not at rope drop, and eases from 3p on. That makes midafternoon the cheap window, and the 95-degree drop is worth the walk to Timber Canyon.
Thunderhead
Leave it alone at rope drop, when it's at its daily peak. The GCI woodie has the cleanest decay in the park: near walk-on by early afternoon and still there at night, and the wooded layout is a different ride in the dark.
Lightning Rod
The front-gate marquee in Jukebox Junction, and the last stop on the way to the parking lot. It peaks around midday and thins through the evening, so the walk out is the cheapest it gets. The 2024 chain lift means a more reliable night than the launched years.

The shape of the day
NightFlight Expedition and Big Bear Mountain at the back of the park, then FireChaser Express and Wild Eagle in Wilderness Pass. Those are the lines that climb fastest, so clear them now. Thunderhead is already at its peak this early, so leave it.
Tennessee Tornado, Drop Line, Dragonflier in Wildwood Grove, and the crowd-immune indoor Blazing Fury stay reasonable. On a hot day the water rides, Daredevil Falls and Smoky Mountain River Rampage, go from filler to priority since they clear out fastest in the evening. Save Thunderhead.
Thunderhead falls to a near walk-on and rides completely differently in the dark. Lightning Rod is at its cheapest of the day on the walk out, FireChaser finally lets go in the last hour, and Drop Line at sunset gives you the Smoky Mountain view. Check the app before you commit to a re-ride line.

The paid line-skip is TimeSaver, and for 2026 it comes in four tiers: Resort TimeSaver for resort guests, then TimeSaver, TimeSaver Plus and TimeSaver Premium. Standard is five entries and isn't valid at Lightning Rod, Big Bear Mountain, FireChaser Express, Mystery Mine or Dragonflier, which is most of what you came for. Plus is unlimited on Thunderhead, Wild Eagle, Mystery Mine, Tennessee Tornado, Drop Line and others, once each on FireChaser, Dragonflier and Lightning Rod, and it's not valid on Big Bear Mountain. Not for general guests. Dollywood is a Herschend park, not Cedar Fair, so there's no season-pass early ride time. Resort guests and Gold passholders get a first-hour TimeSaver perk instead: for the first hour after opening their TimeSaver counts as expedited entry at eligible rides, which doesn't include FireChaser Express, Mystery Mine or Dragonflier. DreamMore Resort guests also get an exclusive trolley that reaches the gate about 30 minutes before open, which is a head start to the entrance, not extra ride time. Confirm current perks in the Dollywood app.
No. It opened in 2016 as the world's first launched wooden coaster but had chronic downtime, so for the 2024 season Dollywood replaced the launch with a high-speed chain lift and new trains. It still hits 73 mph and keeps the original layout. Any guide calling it launched is out of date.
Lightning Rod, Thunderhead, and Mystery Mine each require 48 inches. Wild Eagle needs 50 inches. FireChaser Express and Big Bear Mountain are more forgiving at 39 inches. Always double check in the Dollywood app before you promise a kid a specific ride.
Sunday. Sundays average level 3.5 across our 2024 to 2026 measured days and Saturdays are the busiest at 5.6, with weekdays in between at 4.4. If you can pick the month, September and August are the two quietest we've measured, and March and October run busiest.
