Your Rope Drop Plan Is Already Wrong

We tracked 3 days of the new EPA system. Waits swung 300% day-to-day. Here's what that means for Presidents Day weekend.

๐Ÿšจ The Reality Check

Two things we now know for certain:

1. Universal is pricing Presidents Day at Spring Break / Easter levels.

Their dynamic pricing puts this weekend in their highest crowd-expectation bracket. They're expecting a full house.

2. Rope drop waits are wildly unpredictable right now.

Our data shows Mine-Cart ranging from 25 to 120 min at rope drop across 3 days. Mario Kart: 15 to 60 min. Same ride, same time, different day. On a holiday weekend, the swings will be even bigger.

The silver lining: MLK data showed Monday can still be 28-31% lighter than Saturday. Even in a busy weekend, there's a better day.

๐Ÿค” What's Still True About February

Not everything is doom and gloom. Some factors still work in your favor:

But "better than Christmas" doesn't mean "calm." Set expectations accordingly.

๐Ÿ“Š What MLK Weekend Showed Us

We just tracked 52,693 wait time samples across MLK weekend (Jan 17-19). Here's what we learned that applies to Presidents Day:

The big finding: Holiday Monday was the best day.

Not a wildcard. Not "about the same." The actual federal holiday had the lowest waits across all three parks. Epic dropped 28% from Saturday to Monday. IOA dropped 31%.

MLK Weekend Epic IOA USF
Saturday 68 min 64 min 41 min
Sunday 62 min 52 min 35 min
Monday (Holiday) 49 min 44 min 32 min

If this pattern holds for Presidents Day, Monday Feb 16 could be your best bet. We'll track it and update this page with results.

๐Ÿ† Who's Coming

Based on Universal's pricing signals, they're expecting a full house. Here's the breakdown:

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Day-by-Day Breakdown

Based on MLK patterns and February-specific factors:

SAT 14

Valentine's Day + Peak Pricing

Expect Heavy Crowds

Double whammy: Valentine's Day on a Saturday plus Universal's highest pricing tier. This is the day to rope drop if you're going. Evening will be packed with couples.

SUN 15

Still Peak Pricing

Busy But Better

MLK Sunday dropped 9-19% from Saturday. Expect similar patterns here. Valentine's hangover might help - couples sleeping in. Still priced at peak tier though, so manage expectations.

MON 16

Your Best Shot

Best of a Busy Weekend

Still peak pricing, but MLK Monday dropped 28-31% from Saturday. The weekend warriors go home Sunday night. If you have to pick one day this weekend, this is it.

๐Ÿ“‰ The Problem: Rope Drop Waits Are Unpredictable

We tracked 3 days of the new EPA system (Feb 11-13). The same rides, same opening times, wildly different waits:

Ride Feb 11 Feb 12 Feb 13
Mine-Cart 120 min 25 min 90 min
Mario Kart 45 min 15 min 60 min
Ministry 150 min 120 min 120 min
Hiccup 25 min 10 min 15 min
Dragon Racer 35 min 5 min 10 min
Mine-Cart swung from 25 min to 90 min in one day.

Same ride. Same opening time. 3.6x the wait. On a holiday weekend, expect the high end. A static plan won't cut it.

โœ… Early Entry Just Expanded (Updated Feb 14)

Universal updated the official EPA list again. The big rides are now officially part of early entry:

OFFICIAL EPA LIST (UPDATED FEB 14) ยท Source
Ministry of Magic, Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Viking Training Camp, Dragon Racer's Rally, Toothless Meet & Greet, Mario Kart, Mine-Cart Madness, Yoshi's Adventure
DROPPED FROM EPA
Stardust Racers, Carousel, Monsters Unchained, Werewolf (these are short waits anyway)

This is great news. Mine-Cart, Ministry, and the Dragon rides were already opening during EPA all week, but now it's official. The strategy stays the same, but you don't have to wonder if they'll actually open.

โš”๏ธ The Strategy (Updated for Variability)

A static rope drop plan won't work this weekend. Waits swing 300% day-to-day. Here's the framework, but you need live data to execute it:

Rope drop order with early entry: Mario Kart first (15-60 min at rope drop depending on the day), then Mine-Cart (~8:06-8:11). Save Ministry for 7-9 PM when waits drop to ~43 min.

Without early entry? Head straight to Mine-Cart or Mario Kart at park open. They're the highest-demand rides and won't get much shorter until evening. Save Ministry for evening. Stardust, Monsters, Werewolf, and Hiccup are all short waits you can do anytime.
Best day: Monday. MLK data showed 28-31% lighter than Saturday. The weekend warriors go home Sunday night. If you can only pick one day, this is it.
If you're doing multiple days: Flip the script. Do lower-tier rides Saturday evening (when couples are doing dinner), then hit Epic Universe hard Monday morning with the rope drop order above.
Alternative: Skip this weekend entirely. Universal's pricing shows Feb 22-27 (the week after) drops significantly. If your schedule allows, that week is actually the "calm February" window we thought this weekend was.

Why You Need Live Data This Weekend

Our 3 days of tracking prove it: the same ride can be 25 min one day and 90 min the next. On a peak-priced holiday weekend, conditions change by the hour. A plan you made last night could be wrong by 9 AM.
