All parks / Universal Studios Florida / Strategy

The Universal Studios Florida strategy that saves you a morning.

Universal Studios Florida is two different parks this fall depending on the date. On Halloween Horror Nights nights, and that's most nights between August 28 and November 1, the park closes to day guests at 5 PM. That's usually a 9 to 5 day, eight hours, though October Saturdays open at 8 and give you nine. The evening collapse that normally makes this place easy, Transformers back to about 10 and Minion Mayhem back to about 15, simply doesn't happen. The crunch lands in the fifth through seventh hours after open, so about 1 to 3 on a 9 AM day and 2 to 4 on a 10 AM one, and every time-sensitive cheap window is inside the first two hours. Gringotts is the only line worth sprinting to. Transformers is a walk-on for exactly one hour. And the ride nearest the gate is the one to walk past.

Ride Gringotts first, then stop rope-dropping. It's the only ride here the app tells you to sprint to.

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is about 15 minutes in the first hour after open and about 45 by early afternoon, 60 on a busy day. Transformers jumps harder, but it starts at 5 minutes, so there's less to lose when you miss it. Gringotts is the one where showing up late actually costs you, and it's the only ride here the app gives a rope-drop priority. After that the advice is just cheapest and closest, because the worst wait in this park is 45 and there's no second ride worth burning the morning on. Transformers is the exception you have to move for: a walk-on for exactly one hour after open, 30 in the second, 40 at its peak. And Despicable Me Minion Mayhem runs backwards from everything else. It's already about 45 the moment the gates open, because it's the first thing inside them.

  1. T-30m

Get to the gate before open

There's no Early Entry at Universal Studios Florida this fall, so everyone walks in together. The tap-stiles are the first line of the day, and a Horror Nights day gives you eight hours behind them, nine if it's an October Saturday with an 8 AM open.

  2. 0:00

    Walk straight to Diagon Alley

It's about ten minutes from the gate, through Production Central and New York. You'll pass Minion Land on the way in with Minion Mayhem already at 45 minutes. Keep walking.

  3. 0:10

    Ride Escape from Gringotts

About 15 minutes in the first hour, climbing to about 45 by early afternoon and 60 on a busy day. This is the one ride that pays you back for showing up early.

  4. 0:45

    Double back for Transformers

About 5 minutes, and only until the first hour is up. By the second hour it's 30, and it peaks near 40 in the early afternoon, 45 on a busy day. Anyone who tells you there are two cheap hours here is wrong; there's one.

  5. 1:05

Now stop chasing and start counting

From here it's whatever's cheapest and closest. Revenge of the Mummy is about 25 now and rises to roughly 35 for the rest of the day. It stays around 35 through a 5 PM event close and through the usable part of a 7 PM one; its 25-minute median only turns up on nights that run later. There's no clever time to ride it, so take it when you're standing next to it.

Two different days, depending on whether it's a Horror Nights night

  1. 9:10a

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

About 15 minutes right now. It's 45 by early afternoon and 60 on a busy day, and on an event night you're out of the park before it ever comes back down. It's the only ride here worth sprinting to.

  2. 9:45a

    Transformers: The Ride-3D

About 5 minutes, and only until 10. After that it's 30, and it peaks near 40 in the early afternoon, 45 on a busy day. Eight minutes back toward the front of the park from Diagon Alley, and worth every one of them.

  3. 10:05a

    Revenge of the Mummy

About 25 now, 40 on a busy day, then 35 and flat from late morning right through to the 5 PM close. It never eases on an event day, so early is the only good answer. Free single rider line if you'll split up.

  4. 10:50a

    MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

About 10 now, 20 by midday, and near 30 by 2. Air conditioned, genuinely re-rideable, and it runs a free single rider line too.

  5. 11:15a

    The Simpsons Ride

About 25 now and near 30 an hour later, 40 on a busy day. Next door in Springfield, so it costs you a four-minute walk, and you're not saving it for later because later doesn't get better.

  6. 12:00p

    Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

About 45 all morning, 50 to 55 on a busy day, and about 35 by now. It drifts toward 30 later, but the genuinely cheap window is the last hour of a night that stays open, and an event day is never one. Twelve-minute walk back through Hollywood to Minion Land.

Fall hours here move day to day. Nine to five, eight to five, ten to seven. Built from 1,400,000+ measured waits.

These are typical August waits, not live ones, and busy-day numbers say so. A few of the in-between hours come from our rolling 90-day curve, which tracks August closely. None of them are Halloween Horror Nights waits: the event is a separate ticket and a separate set of queues after 5 PM, and we don't publish those numbers here. The clock times assume a typical day; on a busy one you'll run behind from the first ride onward, roughly five minutes a stop and 20 to 30 minutes by the afternoon. Fall day-guest hours are 9 AM to 5 PM on event nights, 8 AM to 5 PM on October Saturdays, and 10 AM to 7 PM on the nights without an event, which are mostly Mondays and Tuesdays. On an October Saturday, run the event-day order an hour earlier than the clock below. The two-park tab's evening block assumes Islands of Adventure runs to 8, which is most fall nights; on one of its shorter 6 or 7 PM closes, start that block three hours before close and drop the last stop.

One good window, one long crunch, and an evening you might not get

Morning Open – 12p

The whole plan lives in the first two hours

Gringotts at about 15, Transformers at 5, Mummy at 15, MEN IN BLACK at 10, Simpsons at 10. On an event day every time-sensitive cheap window at this park is inside the first two hours after open, and Transformers' is only one hour long. Minion Mayhem is the exception pointing the wrong way: it's already about 45 at open because it's the first ride inside the gate, and it peaks inside the first two hours.

Afternoon 12p – 5p

The crunch, and on event days the end

Waits sit highest in the fifth through seventh hours after open, about 1 to 3 on a 9 AM event day and 2 to 4 on a 10 AM one, and most things sit near 35. Gringotts is 45, Mummy 35, MEN IN BLACK 30, and E.T. is 35 and barely eases after. No ride order beats this window, so spend it on a show, Diagon Alley itself, and Villain-Con Minion Blast, which is usually 5 to 10 minutes with a 15-minute second-hour high. On a Halloween Horror Nights night this is your last stretch, because day guests are out at 5.

Evening 5p – 7p, non-event nights only

The wedge you mostly get on Mondays and Tuesdays

On the nights without an event the park runs to 7 and the afternoon comes apart. Transformers, Minion Mayhem, Race Through New York and Trolls all come down, though a 7 PM close catches them halfway rather than at the bottom: figure 15 to 20 on Transformers and about 25 on Minion Mayhem. Two rides refuse to play along. Revenge of the Mummy is still 35 at both 5 and 6 PM, and E.T. Adventure barely eases either. On the other nights of a Horror Nights week none of this applies to you, so check the date before you build a plan around it.

We'll send you the Universal Studios Florida route, the Horror Nights version, and a link to the app before your trip. No spam, just the plan.

No spam. Walk away whenever you want.

On a Horror Nights night, the day ends at 5.

Ride Ready reads the real schedule for the date you're standing in, so a Horror Nights night gets a Horror Nights plan and a Monday gets its evening back. And you're not just riding the data, you're part of it: time your wait in the app and the next rider in line gets a truer picture than the park's posted number. Think Waze, for theme park lines.
